Former Rangers defender claims he was offered sensational Ibrox return

Former Rangers defender Alan Hutton has suggested that he was offered a “chance” of an Ibrox return – but admits that it’s unlikely there would be any space for him at Ibrox now with the form of James Tavernier.

The full-back left Ibrox in 2008 and has been regularly linked with moves back without anything ever really coming of it.

Hutton is a free agent after being released by Aston Villa over the summer and admits that right-back isn’t a position Rangers will be looking for reinforcements in.

“Maybe a few years ago there was a chance at Rangers but again it’s probably a position that they’re not in a hurry to fill,” Hutton told Football Insider.

Five or six years ago, bringing Hutton back would’ve been a no-brainer but the lack of any real interest in him now shows how well Tavernier has performed over recent seasons.

Whether there was any real desire to bring him back to Ibrox previously is unclear but it seems unlikely that there was anything serious in it.

It seems likely now that Hutton will end up retiring after an impressive career however a return to Ibrox just wasn’t to be after his decision to leave to join Tottenham in 2008.
