Rangers have been handed a major transfer boost as Aston Villa have pulled out of the race to sign Alfredo Morelos in January, Football Insider has learned.
The Midlands giants are in the market for a new front man in the winter window and the Colombia international had been in their sights despite their huge summer spend of nearly £150million.
Ibrox sources have told Football Insider that the club have learned through third parties that Villa are no longer looking at Morelos as they turn their attention to potential striker loans or relatively low-fee signings.
That rules out a move for Morelos, who is valued by Rangers well in excess of £20million following his stunning exploits in the first half of the season.
Chairman Dave King and manager Steven Gerrard both last week ruled out the possibility of the club cashing in on their prize asset in January.
The absence of an ambitious and cash-rich club like Villa from the race will certainly ease the pressure on the Ibrox hierarchy to cave in on a player who has emerged as pivotal to the outcome of the most exciting Scottish title race in a decade.
The Colombian took his goal tally for the season to a remarkable 25 from 28 matches with his strike in yesterday’s 5-0 SPL mauling of Hearts.
He is the top scorer in Europe this season with 13 Europa League goals, eight in qualifying and five from five group stage matches.
Morelos, 23, has also showed signs of eliminating the temperamental flaws that have been a feature of his three seasons in Glasgow.
He was sent off five times last season, but has received just five bookings in the new campaign following strong criticism from Steven Gerrard of his 2018-19 conduct.
Morelos signed a new contract in March that runs until the summer of 2023.
