Alex McLeish reacts as Rangers suffer pre-season blow amid Blackpool cancellation

We’re delighted to welcome former Rangers manager Alex McLeish as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox…

Alex McLeish has backed Rangers manager Steven Gerrard to use his initiative and deal with the blow of having their friendly versus Blackpool cancelled.

The fixture was scheduled for Wednesday evening [21/07/21] but the Gers announced via their website on Monday that both clubs had decided to call it off after an ongoing COVID-19 related issue within English League One side’s camp.

Due to the short notice, no game was arranged in place of it, but McLeish is confident that it won’t disturb the Gers’ preparations too much ahead of the new season.

“[Will it disrupt Rangers] In terms of momentum yes, but Stevie can arrange something and get a practice match going and do it internally,” McLeish told Ibrox News.

“They will organise a friendly amongst themselves with their big squad and split the teams and still maintain fitness and strategy through those sort of avenues.”

It’s not the ideal scenario while the Gers are still looking to build their fitness up and get back into the groove of things.

The Light Blues have already played a couple of games but at this stage every fixture is an opportunity for the players, either to prove their fitness or to prove a point to Gerrard, particularly for the young and fringe members of the squad.

However, it’s part and parcel of life in modern times as the pandemic continues to cause chaos in the footballing world and beyond.

But the club and Gerrard have surely planned for every eventuality, and this is just a minor stumbling block as the Gers looks to start the official season with a bang.
